The fax machine was invented in 1843 by the Scottish inventor Alexander
Bain.  He got a British patent for "improvements in producing and
regulating electric currents and improvements in timepieces and in
electric printing and signal telegraphs”.  It was based on the
telegraph.  Needless to say, it was slow.  Others invented too.  See
