When I was attending a small university, the 1130 was being phased out.
A Varian V-73 had been bought to replace it. Varian didn't offer Cobol,
but the university wanted to teach Cobol. As a lab project, I wrote an
1130 instruction emulator in microcode for the V-73. Two faculty
members wrote the I/O support. We added a switch to swap the head
numbers on the (two-head) disk drive. In one mode, it booted Vortex and
ran as a V-73. In the other mode, it booted Vortex, loaded the 1130
microcode, then booted and ran as an 1130. It was used to teach Cobol
(and all the other CS classes) for about five years. Does anybody want
the MIDAS code? I also have flow diagrams. All I have for the I/O
simulator is Varian DASMR listings. I keep intending to type it in
again, but I never seem to get around to it.
