Sorry to chime in again, but I forgot to mention that binary
as the foundation of data was discussed by Leibniz mid-17th century.
Shannon, Atanasoff, Zuse, were "standing on the shoulders"
of some distinguished giants. (Shannon's contribution
was the notion of information, as distinct from data.
Probably better to not get me started :-)
