Last year, Emerson Pugh invited me to write an historical synopsis of the
1401 and its contemporaries, beginning with its emergence from unit record
equipment and juxtaposed against the early large-scale computers. The
essay has been posted on the IEEE Global History Network STARS site:
http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/STARS:Early_Popular_Computers,_1950_-_1970

and is currently featured on the IEEE STARS web page:
http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Special:STARS

I couldn't have composed this (less than 4k word) article without the
editing diligence, hands-on historical perspective, insights and
perseverance from many of you (over a whole year). Thanks again!

Best wishes during this holiday season,

- Robert

p.s. From http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Special:STARS
"IEEE STARS is an online compendium of invited, peer-reviewed articles on
the history of major developments in electrical and computer science and
technology. Although written for a general audience, these articles are
meant to provide authoritative information, valuable in itself, but also
useful as starting points for further investigations."
